ABOUT
ILEA

The LEA is a knowledge exchange programme between in-house and external African counsel and their international counterparts during 2-3 day courses in countries across Africa.

The ILEA is supported by local law societies, bar associations, ILFA alumni and sponsors in delivering training that is supported by international law firms and organisations within the ILFA network.

Our first LEA took place in Lagos, Nigeria in partnership with the Nigerian Bar Association-Section on business law in March 2019. The academy focussed on Banking and Finance and trained 100 selected lawyers from across private practice, in-house legal teams and government institutions.

The ILFA/NBA-SBL Banking and Finance Academy was designed to assist junior finance lawyers in furthering their legal knowledge and expertise in the field of banking and finance. The course was made up of practical and interactive modules and aims to provide attendees with a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of banking and finance law.

ILFA continuously works on bringing more LEA programmes to various jurisdictions each year. The programmes will be organised in partnership with ILFA sponsors. The course swill be directed at eligible lawyers across Africa and globally as we plan to host the programme online and in person.

ILEA

ILFA Elevate

In June 2019, ILFA introduced an additional programme called ILFA Elevate - a one and a half day ILFA leadership summit aimed at uniting and elevating the African in-house legal community through discussion, cooperation and network building. During the summit, a variety of topics are discussed including how to build and develop an in-house legal function that is an integral business unit, how to adopt a balanced approach to regulation and compliance and how to maximise relationships with external legal providers.

Attendance objectives for in house lawyers:

  • Network with a premium audience of peers, where senior in house counsel meet and discuss hot topics in an exclusive and dedicated forum.

  • Exchange ideas on workplace practices within established and respected in house teams.

  • Gain knowledge and insight from leading international in-house counsel as they discuss their greatest challenges and best practice approaches.

  • Discuss and debate what the future holds for Africa based in-house counsel.

  • Uncover first-hand experiences on new approaches, differentiators and concepts from legal thought-leaders.

  • Acquire proven, actionable insights for your team in a rapidly changing world.
